In 2005 I went to Italy to study with Teri Austin. This trip began a whole new art series, in which I was able to explore a new country and a new direction in my work.
At the Villa Barberino, there are many lovely spots to enjoy. Here is one such spot, an old wall, twisting vines, a huge pot of geraniums and the glorious Italian sun slanting through the doorway. This idyllic scene was inspired by a photo taken on the grounds of the Villa.
Materials: Cotton batiks and prints, variegated thread, tinsel thread, fabric paint, nylon tulle.

In this art quilt, I revisited the challenge of creating depth with fabric and thread. I also used fabric paint and melted Angelina fibers to add layers of interest. The view is a lovely old bell tower on the grounds of the Dievole vineyard near Siena, Italy. I had just tasted some wonderful Chianti wines and was savoring the beautiful countryside as well.

The Villa Barberino, dating from the 15th century, with its courtyard, olive and cypress trees and vineyards was the inspiration for this piece. I used many different materials, such as copper mesh for the tile roofs, silk and velvet fabrics and hand embroidery for embellishments to express the many colors and textures.
Materials: Commercial prints, hand-dyed, and batik cotton fabrics, silk, burn-out velvet, copper mesh, netting, Seta color paints, metallic powders, rayon, cotton and polyester threads, wool embroidery yarn. Hand and machine-quilted.
