The magnificent architecture of mountains, sea, and man-made city- scape melt together at dusk, creating a magical moment. The famous skyline and silhouette of Rio de Janeiro’s mountains and bay as seen from the air was my birthplace and inspiration for this art quilt.

Carnival in Brazil is a yearly extravaganza of music, dancing, and color. The dancers’ brilliant costumes whirl in time to the music, and from above resemble children’s tops–all joy, all energy, and all color. Being part Brazilian, and a dancer myself, I have always wanted to make an art quilt that captures the joy of Carnival.
The image was my interpretation of several photos taken by Helmut Teissl. He is well-known for his lively photos of Brazilian Carnival.
Materials: Cotton hand-dyes and solids, nylon tulle, lame, mylar, Angelina fibers, sequins, beads, variegated thread, couched trim, fabric paint.

This art quilt was an emotional response to the lush crepe myrtle trees in my neighborhood. They are quite large, with smooth, twisting branches and full, colorful blooms. To me, they symbolize the sensuous beauty of summertime in the South. I let the colors and shapes of the hand-dyed fabric suggest how to embellish the surface with machine applique, couching and quilting.
Materials: Hand-dyed and batik cotton fabrics, various threads machined quilted and couched, Angelina fibers.
