HURRICANE SEASON

This quilt represents the wild weather we often get on the Eastern coast of the United States.  The chaos and destruction of these giant storms completely shatter the order of our lives.  On closer inspection, one can see lightening bolts, water running every which way, and swirling debris.  There are four hurricane symbols hand-quilted to represent the four hurricanes which hit Florida this year.  The quilt top is painted and pieced, appliqued, and machine and hand quilted, using hand-dyed cotton fabric and thread, glitter and rayon threads.

Materials:  Cotton hand-dyes, shibori, and solids, machine and hand quilted with variegated, tinsel and rayon threads,  fabric paint and Shiva paintsticks.

VESSEL OF FIRE

The demands of home and family leave me with little time to quilt.  And so if was with great patience that I added to this hand-dyed quilt top little by little, over many weeks and months.  The top and many of the threads were dyed by Laura Wasilowski.  This piece was also inspired by the glass art of Dale Chihuly.  If you look inside the vessel, you will see a self-portrait.

Materials: Cotton hand-dyes and prints, lame, silk scraps, couched yarns, variegated and rayon threads.

RIO – CITY OF MY BIRTH

The magnificent architecture of mountains, sea, and man-made city- scape melt together at dusk, creating a magical moment.  The famous skyline and silhouette of Rio de Janeiro’s mountains and bay as seen from the air was my birthplace  and inspiration for this quilt.

Materials:  Hand-dyed cotton, commercial cotton, batiks, netting, polyester sheers, Angelina fibers, mylar, sequins, beads, Glitter, rayon,  cotton, and polyester threads, Seta colors paint, Misty Fuse.

Celestial Celebration

This quilt is the second in a universe series, and shows the stars in the Trifid Nebula.  I used this photo of stars, and brilliantly colored gas clouds as a starting point.  Playing with my fabrics, sparkly threads and fibers, and paint was such fun.  I decided when it was done, it looked like a party was happening in that part of the universe that night.

Materials:  Cotton batiks and hand-dyes, nylon tulle, mylar, variegated thread, tinsel thread, neon thread, Angelina fibers, painted Wonder Under, Shiva paintsticks.
